Statement by Minister Bibeau on International Day of La Francophonie

Statement

March 20, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:

“La Francophonie represents 274 million people across the globe. It provides Canadians with a multitude of opportunities for training, university partnerships and professional networking. It offers our artists greater visibility and our athletes a chance to shine at the Francophonie Games. How fortunate we are to belong to this space of sharing, which teems with ideas and innovation!

“Most importantly, La Francophonie is a breeding ground for action, where all the member governments work together on the big issues that affect the francophone world, in particular human rights, economic growth, cooperation in conflict zones, climate change and the fight against poverty. The theme for this 30th International Day of La Francophonie is, therefore, La langue française, notre trait d’union pour agir [the French language, which unites us for action].

“Canada is proud to work in collaboration with the International Organisation of La Francophonie, whose priorities match our vision of international development.

“We are particularly proud to take steps to strengthen gender equality and the economic, political and social power of women and girls.

“We are working to give women opportunities to prosper, including through the Réseau des Femmes Entrepreneures Francophones [network of female francophone entrepreneurs]. We provide women with platforms, such as the World Forum of Francophone Women. We support women’s participation in peacekeeping operations.

“We are taking action so that women and girls are educated, empowered, protected from violence and free to make their own choices. For Canada, this is the best way to promote growth that works for everyone and stability that will transform the future of francophone populations.

“Canada is therefore pleased to continue its commitment within La Francophonie.

“I wish every Canadian a happy International Day of La Francophonie, and I invite you to watch and share my video!”
