Statement
July 30, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the signing into law of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, aiming to advance the peace process by implementing provisions of the 2012 peace accord between the Government of the Philippines and the parties in conflict in the Muslim-majority areas of Mindanao.
“We commend the commitment to a peaceful solution demonstrated by the Government of the Philippines and all other involved parties. After decades of conflict, this law presents an opportunity to bring lasting peace and stability to the Filipino people.
“Canada has always strongly supported the Mindanao Peace Process. We are pleased to have partnered with our Filipino and international allies in support of peace and development in Mindanao. We have supported initiatives to end the use of child soldiers, prevent gender-based violence and reduce poverty in the Bangsamoro region. Canadian assistance has also helped local governments to better serve their citizens, supported communities to build basic infrastructure and start new businesses and provided humanitarian relief to those displaced by conflict.”
