August 23, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

“Following the decision of the Malian constitutional court, Canada congratulates Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta on his re-election. We applaud the people of Mali for their participation in the democratic process, despite security concerns, which constitutes an important step toward the stabilization of their country.

“Canada is a long-time friend of the people of Mali. We will continue to work closely with the United Nations and other international partners to assist Mali in its ongoing work on democratic and governance reform, help advance the implementation of the peace process, build prosperity, reduce poverty, improve security and provide stability for all Malians.

“Canada encourages Mali’s new government to further increase the transparency of the electoral process ahead of the legislative elections.

“Looking ahead, it will be important for the government to work on the implementation of the 2015 Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, in order to achieve meaningful progress over the coming years.”
