Statement by Minister Bibeau on International Day of the Girl

October 11, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:

“On this International Day of the Girl, I say to girls all over the world: this day is about you, but we must work together until every single day is about you.

“I have no doubt that empowered girls can—and will—change our world for the better. This is the belief on which we built Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy—that advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is our best bet for building the more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world in which we all want to live.

“Each and every one of you is brimming with possibility and potential. I have seen this everywhere I have gone in the world—from the most desperate crisis situations in Bangladesh or Jordan to the most rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa to my own home, Canada.

“But to reach your full potential, you have told me time and time again that you need knowledge and tools to have a meaningful say in all aspects of your lives—and at every stage of your lives. You need to be able to make informed choices about your bodies. You need discriminatory and dangerous practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and sexual violence, to stop.

“You have also told me that the foundation for all of this is quality education and skills training. I am listening; the Government of Canada is listening. That is why Canada, along with the European Union, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the World Bank, will invest close to Can$3.8 billion in education for women and girls in crisis and conflict situations. We believe that every girl everywhere should have access to quality education in safe settings—no matter how daunting the challenges are in the places they live.

“Girls, you can count on Canada to keep listening and to continue to seek out your opinions and advice, as we did at the G7 Development Ministers’ Meeting. We will continue to give you every opportunity to raise your voices, demand what you need, express your outrage and share your ideas for transformational change.”
