Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs on United Nations Day
Statement
October 24, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“For 73 years, the United Nations has been vital to the ongoing pursuit of global peace and prosperity. It has been the main multilateral body through which countries have come together in the service of humanity, working to confront the most pressing challenges facing our world.
“As a trusted and reliable partner and one of the UN’s founding members, Canada can trace its support for common global goals to a principle that Canadians long ago understood: partnership is the pathway to progress. Our commitment to multilateralism includes a commitment to renewal and reform and a commitment to continue to work together to make our multilateral world order more efficient, fairer and more inclusive.
“Whether fighting terrorism or responding to humanitarian emergencies or promoting human rights, at home or abroad, success is far more likely through multilateral actions.
“Canadians are also deeply aware that no one country acting alone or bilaterally can tackle systemic issues like migration and climate change. The Agenda 2030 provides a road map for solutions; collective and coordinated actions are urgently needed to meet its ambitions and ensure a more sustainable world for future generations. We know that real change is possible, but only if we work together, and no organization is better suited to convene countries for discussion and convert ideas into action than the UN.
“Canada is running for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council because we believe we can bring an efficient, inclusive and innovative voice to enhance global security and achieve a better and more sustainable peace.
“The UN is the world’s most important global forum for dialogue, consensus and action. On this day, we celebrate its successes and pledge to keep working alongside our UN partners to bring peace, prosperity and dignity to all people and ensure human rights are respected.”
