Canada to host Joint Ministerial Committee Meeting with European Union

News release

November 4, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Since the end of the Second World War, Europe and Canada have worked hand-in-hand to build a consensus around the value of a multilateral world order, open to all, that prioritizes common rules over the pursuit of individual gain.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will welcome her European Union counterpart, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, to Montréal, Québec for the second annual Canada-EU Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) meeting on November 6, 2018.

Building on the success of the inaugural JMC, and after co-hosting a fruitful Women Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in September, this meeting will provide the opportunity for Canada and the EU to coordinate their response to arguably the world's most pressing challenge: the threat to the rules-based international order. The two will seek to coordinate collective responses to issues such as: human rights, women's rights and gender equality; climate change; migration; nuclear non-proliferation; and global peace and security.

Mogherini and Freeland will also discuss these challenges at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit and with students from McGill University.
