Foreign Affairs Minister to attend Lima Group meeting in Guatemala

News release

June 3, 2019 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced she will attend a meeting of Lima Group members in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on Thursday, June 6, 2019, as the crisis in Venezuela continues to deepen.

This follows the participation by the Minister in the joint meeting of representatives of the Lima Group and the International Contact Group that was held today in New York City.

Lima Group members will meet in Guatemala to review the ongoing threats against members of Venezuela’s democratic National Assembly as well as to coordinate how international partners work together to support the Venezuelan people in their struggle for a peaceful transition to democracy.

“The Venezuelan people have called for the end of the Maduro dictatorship and a return to democracy, despite the violent repression of the regime. The Guatemala meeting of the Lima Group will build on the important work that Canada is doing with its Lima Group partners to support the people of Venezuela, as well as Juan Guaidó and the National Assembly, in their fight for democracy.”

– Hon. Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs
