Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Germany and Egypt

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will participate in the Alliance for Multilateralism conference, Advocating Human Rights in the 21st Century, hosted in Berlin by Heiko Maas, Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, on December 10, 2019. Minister Champagne will then attend the inaugural Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development in Africa in Aswan, Egypt, on December 11 and 12, 2019.

At the conference in Berlin, Minister Champagne will deliver a keynote address to highlight the importance of the multilateral system to defending and promoting universal human rights.

Minister Champagne will then travel to Egypt to participate in the Aswan Forum’s inaugural meeting, titled An Agenda for Sustainable Peace, Security and Development in Africa. The Aswan Forum will bring together African leaders and strategic partners, including the governments of Canada, Japan, Sweden and the United Kingdom, to discuss peace, security and development on the continent. Minister Champagne will use the opportunity to underline Canada’s strong commitment to engaging with African partners in a sustained and meaningful way.

  • Canada, France and Germany created the Alliance for Multilateralism—an informal alliance of countries that have a mutual respect for the rules-based international order—to promote global cooperation to tackle issues such as inequality, artificial intelligence and climate change. The Alliance held its first official event in September 2019 at the United Nations General Assembly. 

  • Canada is a strategic partner in the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development in Africa. Its inaugural meeting will bring together various heads of state and government, foreign ministers, international and financial organizations, the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities related to peace, security and development in Africa. The Aswan Forum is organized as an initiative of the Government of Egypt during its current Presidency of the AU.
