Minister of Foreign Affairs speaks with interim President of Venezuela

Yesterday, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke with Juan Guaidó, Venezuela’s interim President.

During the call, Minister Garneau expressed Canada’s serious concern over the unacceptable actions taken by the Maduro regime against democratic forces and civil society and reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting a peaceful return to democracy in Venezuela.

Minister Garneau emphasized the need to create the conditions for free, fair, and transparent elections in Venezuela and the importance of the international community’s support for this work.

Minister Garneau and interim President Guaidó also discussed the situation of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, including Canada’s hosting of the next International Donors’ Conference in Solidarity with Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants in June 2021, to broaden awareness of the situation and mobilize additional resources. They agreed to stay in close contact.
