Backgrounder – Canada announces support for Sexual  and Reproductive Health and Rights for Women, Adolescent Girls and Children

Today, Canada announced $325 million in funding over 5 to 7 years for 11 projects with Canadian health partners. The announcement is based on the results from the Call for proposals - Health and Rights for Women, Adolescent Girls and Children, launched in July 2019. These projects will improve the quality of, access to and demand for integrated health services and information for women, adolescents and children at the community, health facility and system levels.

Project: TOGETHER

Description: This project will increase the awareness of health-related rights for vulnerable persons, particularly those facing intersectional oppression due to gender or sexual orientation, mental or physical disability or indigeneity. The project will empower individuals and communities to advocate for better sexual and reproductive health services and policies, and will educate and encourage young people to engage with their communities and their governments to make their voices heard.

Description: This project will increase the awareness of health-related rights on the part of extremely vulnerable and marginalized women and girls, particularly out-of-school adolescent girls, between 10 and 19 years old. The project will provide training and support for educators and health care providers to ensure that adolescents have access to comprehensive education on sexuality.

Description: This project aims to increase the awareness of health-related rights for the most vulnerable and marginalized adolescent girls and women, particularly those who are at risk or are survivors, of sexual or gender-based violence. The project will support sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy through its work with local organizations, grassroots movements and policy makers at all levels of government.

Description: This project will dismantle barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for the most vulnerable people, particularly adolescent girls and young women between 10 and 25 years old. The project will support SRHR advocacy through its capacity-building exercises with adolescent girls and young women, and through its awareness-raising campaigns at the community, regional and national levels.

Description: This project will increase the awareness of health-related rights for the most marginalized persons, particularly adolescent girls and young women between 10 and 24 years old who face intersecting vulnerabilities due to, among other factors, disability, religion,gender or sexual orientation. Working alongside local and grassroots organizations, RESPECT will strengthen local, regional, and international SRHR advocacy networks.

Description: This project will increase SRHR for the most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly adolescent girls and young women between 15 to 24 years old, including those with intersecting vulnerabilities due to sexual or gender orientation, or their status as refugees or internally displaced persons. The project will build capacity for SRHR advocacy at the local, national and regional levels.

Description: This project will address acute gaps in SRHR in order to improve the enjoyment of health-related rights for adolescent girls and young women. The project will collaborate with local organizations to support SRHR advocacy from the community level to the international level.

Description: This project will increase the awareness of health-related human rights for the most vulnerable people, particularly adolescent girls and young women, both in and out of school, between 10 and 24 years old. Through its work alongside local organizations and with communities, the project will systematically empower adolescent girls and young women to take the lead on SRHR advocacy within their communities and their countries.

Description: This project aims to increase the awareness of health rights and access to health services for the most vulnerable women, adolescents and children. L’AMIE will work with local organizations that are familiar with sexual and gender-based violence to educate young women – and young men – on SRHR within their communities.
