Statement on one-year anniversary of general elections in Myanmar

Statement

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the first anniversary of the general elections in Myanmar:

“A year ago today, on November 8, 2020, Myanmar held general elections that independent observers deemed to be democratic and representative of the will of the people of Myanmar.

“The military coup on February 1, 2021, undermined this important milestone and reversed the country’s democratic momentum.

“Today, on the anniversary of the November 8 elections, Canada reiterates its staunch support of the Myanmar people’s democratic aspirations.

“Canada calls on the armed forces of Myanmar to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders and allow unhindered access for humanitarian assistance.

“Canada continues to call for the cessation of violence, respect for human rights, and release of all unjustly detained individuals. We will continue to support the aspirations of the Myanmar people and those who work to promote peace and an inclusive democratic future.”
