Minister Joly meets with South Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met yesterday with Chung Eui-yong, South Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, for the first time, on the margins of the G7 Foreign and Development Ministers’ Meeting in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

The ministers emphasized the strength of the Canada-South Korea bilateral relationship, including strong people-to-people ties and valuable commercial engagement. They discussed their shared concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the importance of international collaboration in addressing the pandemic.

During their meeting, the ministers also discussed deepening bilateral collaboration related to the Indo-Pacific region in order to advance shared priorities, including trade and investment, and ways to support the Women, Peace and Security agenda. Minister Joly reaffirmed Canada’s enduring commitment to security and stability in the region.

Minister Joly also took the opportunity to congratulate Minister Chung on South Korea’s successful hosting of the recent Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial virtual conference, and personally thanked him for his engagement with the G7 throughout 2021.
