Canada announces additional $50 million in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan

Canada remains deeply concerned by the worsening situation in Afghanistan. The humanitarian response needs to be scaled up to avert an unprecedented disaster.

Today, at the High-Level Pledging Event on Supporting the Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan 2022, convened by the UN, Qatar, the United Kingdom and Germany, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, announced an additional $50 million in funding from Canada in 2022 as part of its continued response to the humanitarian needs of people in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries.

This assistance will be delivered through UN and other established humanitarian partners with the operational capacity to respond to these needs. With Canada’s support, partners will provide life-saving assistance, such as food and nutrition, emergency health care, clean water and sanitation, and protection services.

  • In 2022, including the funding announced today, Canada has allocated 143 million in humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries.

  •  An estimated 24 million people will need humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan in 2022, up from 18.4 million in 2021.
