Statement by Minister Joly on North Korea’s missile launches

Statement

October 4, 2022- Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the launching of ballistic missiles by North Korea:

“Canada strongly condemns North Korea’s reckless missile launches, which threaten peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

“Canada is gravely concerned by North Korea’s launching of an intermediate-range ballistic missile on October 4 over Japan’s territory. This was an escalatory provocation that endangered Japanese civilians. North Korea’s actions needlessly raised tensions in the region and violated multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.

“We call on North Korea to comply with its international obligations and to return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only meaningful path forward.

“Canada stands firmly with the people of Japan and South Korea and will continue to work with the international community to uphold regional security and advocate for North Korea’s denuclearization.”
