Statement on North Korea’s continued missile launches

Statement

April 14, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

“Canada strongly condemns North Korea’s launch yesterday of an intercontinental ballistic missile. These continued advancements in their missile program and reckless provocations violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, undermine the region’s peace and security and are putting civilian lives at risk.

“Canada reiterates its call on North Korea to respect its international obligations and to cease all actions that further exacerbate tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. We urge North Korea to accept the repeated offers of dialogue put forward by Japan, the United States and South Korea and to engage in good-faith diplomacy.

“As a friend and partner to South Korea and Japan, Canada is committed to continuing to work with them to uphold the rules-based international order in the face of North Korea’s continued aggression.

“As outlined in its Indo-Pacific Strategy, Canada is actively collaborating with its partners in the North Pacific to strengthen peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in the broader region.”
