Canada imposes new sanctions against Lebanese nationals

Backgrounder

Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against 3 Lebanese individuals under the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (Sergei Magnitsky Law) in coordination with the United States and the United Kingdom. These sanctions list 3 Lebanese nationals involved in acts of significant corruption, including the misappropriation of public assets for personal gain and the transfer of the proceeds of corruption to foreign states.

Canadian measures

Individuals listed in the Schedule of the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Regulations are subject to a dealings prohibition that will effectively freeze any assets the 3 individuals may hold in Canada. These measures also prohibit persons in Canada and Canadians outside Canada from making available property to the listed individuals and render them inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The specific prohibitions are set out in the regulations.

The names of the individuals added to the schedule of these regulations are:

  • Riad Toufic Salameh
