News release

May 1, 2024 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Today, the second edition of the Flight PS752 Commemorative Scholarship opened for applications for the 2024 to 2025 academic year. The scholarship program honours those who tragically lost their lives in the unlawful downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by the Iranian regime on January 8, 2020. Fifty-five Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents were among the 176 people killed in this tragedy. Among these victims were brilliant minds and dedicated students who made significant contributions to Canadian educational institutions.

Following the wishes of their loved ones and to honour the legacy of every single victim, Canada’s Flight PS752 Commemorative Scholarship Program is disbursing 176 scholarships over 5 years. International and Canadian students attending colleges and universities in Canada are eligible to apply if their field of study aligns with one of the victims’ academic or professional backgrounds or focuses on the prevention of air disasters.

For the 2023 to 2024 academic year, 32 scholarships were awarded to eligible recipients. These included Canadian and international students studying at institutions across Canada, some of them family members of the victims of Flight PS752. Recipients included doctoral, master’s, undergraduate and college students.
