Backgrounder: Canada announces $60 million in funding to support stability in Haiti

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced new funding of $60 million to support multilateral efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation in Haiti. The announcement was made during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York City, New York. The funding is being distributed as follows:

Project title: Supporting Stabilization Efforts in Haiti: Increased Support for the Multinational Security Support mission (or its successor mission), conditional on the passing of the Haiti resolution currently under consideration by the UN Security Council
Funding: $40 million
Project details: The current international security force in Haiti—the Multinational Security Support mission—requires enhanced support and a revised mandate to improve its operational effectiveness. In anticipation of the adoption of a forthcoming UN Security Council resolution authorizing an expanded force supported by a UN support office, additional funding is urgently needed. This funding will bolster the mission and its existing support structures while also facilitating a smooth and effective transition to a new model supported by a robust UN support office.

Project title: Regional Maritime Security Initiative
Funding: $20 million
Project details: This initiative will help improve maritime security in the Caribbean by enhancing regional capacity to counter the flow of illicit goods (including arms and narcotics) to, and through, the region. With a particular focus on countering trafficking into and out of Haiti, this initiative will enhance regional cooperation, strengthen maritime domain awareness, improve operational readiness and investigative capacity, advance connectivity to information sharing platforms, and assist in legislative and judicial reforms needed for long-term sustainability. These efforts will be developed and delivered alongside G7 and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) partners.
