Joint statement celebrating International Volunteer Day

Statement

December 5, 2025 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, and the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), issued the following statement:

“On International Volunteer Day, Canada recognizes the incredible volunteers in Canada and around the world whose efforts power not-for-profit organizations, charities and countless community initiatives.

“From supporting food banks to caring for our environment, volunteers help weave the strong, caring communities we all rely on. Canadian volunteers are the threads that bind communities together. Canada’s Volunteer Awards program offers a moment to recognize that everyday generosity. Since 2012, these awards have honoured 213 remarkable recipients and provided $1.14 million in grants to not-for-profit organizations, helping them amplify their impact and continue their vital work in communities across the country.

“For decades, volunteers have also played an important role in Canada’s international development efforts by fundraising, organizing events and volunteering abroad. Through the Volunteer Cooperation Program, thousands of Canadians volunteer in more than 40 partner countries. These volunteers give back by sharing their expertise in agriculture, health, communications, technology and other areas. They also learn immensely from local communities as they build strong partnerships and work together on inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable initiatives.

“As the United Nations launches the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development in 2026, it shines a light on the vital work of volunteers whose dedication uplifts communities and creates real, lasting change.

“This International Volunteer Day, join us in thanking Canada’s amazing volunteers for their generosity and commitment to service.”
