Message from Jane Philpott, Minister of Health World Blood Donor Day

News Release

As Minister of Health, it gives me great pleasure to join countries around the world in celebrating and thanking the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who volunteer through the simple, yet generous, act of giving blood. This year’s theme, ‘Blood connects us all’ reminds us that no matter where we live, we all have it within us to save a life, and to help others live longer, more productive lives.

Year after year, the need for new donors continues to grow. On World Blood Donor Day, I want to encourage Canadians to donate blood throughout the year so there will be sufficient amounts in store when the need arises. Eligible donors can donate up to six times a year, improving the quality of life for as many as 18 of their fellow citizens.

As a regulator, the Government of Canada also has an important role to play in supporting a safe and effective blood donation system. Health Canada considers the safety of Canada’s blood and blood products to be of critical importance to our country’s health care system. Our Government supports the research and development activities of Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec which are designed to ensure Canadians continue to have access to one of the safest and most advanced blood systems in the world.

As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day, I would like to thank current donors and strongly encourage all Canadians to book an appointment with Canadian Blood Services or Héma-Québec to donate. Your donation may help save the lives of your family, friends and neighbours.

I would also encourage all Canadians to visit Canada.ca to find out more about blood donations and how to become a donor.

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
