Consultation: Recommendations for nuclear emergency protection strategies in Canada
Current status: Open
Opened on July 10, 2026 and will close to new input on August 10, 2026
Health Canada is seeking input on our updated recommendations for nuclear emergency protection strategies.
The document open for consultation is an update to our 2018 guidance document: Generic Criteria and Operational Intervention Levels (OILs) for Nuclear Emergency Planning and Response. That guidance recommended criteria that could be compared to radiation measurements or calculations to support decision-making for protective actions during a nuclear emergency. The update introduces a few new criteria and also expands on several key concepts, emphasizing the importance of balancing the risks and consequences of taking disruptive protective actions. The updated guidance recommends that authorities take a comprehensive approach to managing an emergency response that will reduce negative impacts and maximize overall well-being.
