About T & T clove oil
T & T clove oil is a by-product from clove oil processing. It may be used as a fragrance in some self-care products and as an ingredient in pesticides.
T & T clove oil can be found in products, such as:
- self-care products:
- fragrances/perfume
- body lotions
- essential oils
- massage products
- oral care products
- pest control products
Safety of T & T clove oil
Under Canada's Chemicals Management Plan, we review and manage the potential risks that chemical substances can pose to Canadians and the environment. The first stage of the review process is a draft chemical risk assessment.
- an enlarged liver, known as liver hypertrophy
- blood cells in the lymphatic system and lower weight of organs in the lymphatic system which protects against infection and disease
- is not harmful to the environment
- Does not pose a health risk from:
- Body lotion
- Massage products
- Mouthwash
- Essential oil used as a body fragrance/perfume over the age of 9
What we're doing
To reduce Canadians' exposure to T & T clove oil in these products of concern, we're proposing to:
- add T & T clove oil to the toxic substances list
- use regulatory and/or non-regulatory measures to prevent or reduce exposures to T & T clove oil from the use of certain cosmetics
What you can do
Consumers are reminded to:
- read product labels and follow all safety warnings and directions
- labels on cosmetics must list all ingredients
- dispose of the product safely, following the manufacturer's directions
- limit use of products that may contain T & T clove oil, such as essential oils when used as a body fragrance/perfume in children aged 2 to 8 years old
If you're exposed to T & T clove oil at work, talk to your employer and occupational health and safety (OHS) official about:
- relevant laws
- safe handling and storage practices
- requirements under OHS legislation and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
