Health Inequalities Reporting Initiative
The pan-Canadian Health Inequalities Reporting Initiative started in 2012. It's part of the Government of Canada's promise to track, report and act on health inequalities. It responds to domestic and international commitments like the:
- World Health Organization's Rio Political Declaration on the Social Determinants of Health
- United Nations Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action
The initiative is the first federal effort to describe health differences across the country. It studies how health and living conditions differ across different groups of people. It also explores how structures and systems affect population health.
The initiative involves research, working with partners, and sharing information and resources. It aims to:
- strengthen how we monitor and report on health inequalities
- improve how we integrate health equity into public health monitoring
- support how we analyze and use information in policy
- reduce health differences between population groups
The initiative commits to working with Indigenous communities, and aligning its analyses with their values, priorities and perspectives.
The Public Health Agency of Canada leads the initiative with:
- The Pan-Canadian Public Health Network
- Statistics Canada
- The First Nations Information Governance Centre
- The Canadian Institute for Health Information
