2023-2024 Compliance monitoring project: Wholesalers of prescription in-feed veterinary drugs (commercial feed mills)
We verified the compliance of commercial feed mills who handle prescription veterinary drugs for the manufacture of medicated feed.
On this page
What we did
We visited 10 commercial feed mills to verify and gather information on if they met the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act and its regulations for handling and selling prescription drug premixes and prescription medicated feeds.
Considering the Government of Canada's response to antimicrobial resistance, we focused this project on prescription medically important antimicrobials.
What we found
We found that the commercial feed mills we visited sold prescription medicated feeds in line with the relevant regulatory requirements.
All 10 CFMs had findings that were deemed low risk. Inspectors noted findings related to the:
- monitoring of storage conditions for prescription drug premixes
- cleanliness of the premises where premixes are stored and handled
- distribution agreements with third parties that sell and handle prescription medicated feeds
- general documentation and record-keeping practices
What enforcement actions we took
We informed the companies of our findings so they can take steps to address them.
We will work to help CFMs better understand the requirements to improve compliance and oversight of the activities related to selling prescription in-feed veterinary drugs.
