All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.
Captan is a fungicide used on field, greenhouse and orchard crops, greenhouse and outdoor ornamentals, and turf (golf courses and sod farms). Highlights of the re-evaluation decision of the active ingredient captan, published on May 10, 2018, are summarized below.
Cancelled products
As of March 31, 2019
Stop using domestic-class products.
The sale of these products is prohibited as of March 31, 2018.
As of May 10, 2021
Stop using products in the form of wettable powder or wettable granules:
- From now on, these formulations must be offered in water-soluble packaging.
Label changes for captan pesticides, as of May 10, 2020
Cancelled uses
Stop the following uses:
- Ornamental stem dip
- Application on greenhouse cut flowers
- Flower bulbs dip by hand
- Application to tobacco seedlings
- On-farm dry treatment (hand mixing) of bean seeds
- Seed treatment for small-grain vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and sugar beet
Other risk reduction measures
- Maximum spray volume of 150 L/ha on rhubarb in forcing sheds
- Reduction of maximum application rates on fruit trees, grapes and strawberries
- Limit of three applications per season on grapes
- Closed transfer systems (mixing, loading, calibration) and treatment equipment required when treating seeds in commercial facilities, including mobile units
- Closed cab equipped with a filter preventing contact between the occupant and pesticides required for boom spray applications, except for seed treatment, when handling daily:
- More than 42 kg of liquid formulated products
- More than 57 kg of active ingredient in the form of wettable powder or water-soluble sachets (wettable granules)
- Updated buffer zones
- Updated personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
- Updated restricted-entry intervals (REI)
Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.
Using a pesticide contrary to the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
