All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Cypermethrin is an insecticide used on forests, tobacco, oilseed crops, various food and feed crops, livestock and non-crop industrial areas. Highlights of the re-evaluation decisions of the active ingredient cypermethrin, published on July 31, 2018, are summarized below.

Risk reduction measures

  • Application prohibited on greenhouse tobacco seedlings using a fogger or hand mist blower
  • Application prohibited on greenhouse lettuce and tomato
  • 30-day plant-back interval required before sowing rotational crops unless cypermethrin is registered on the new crop
  • Updated restricted-entry intervals (REIs)
  • Added personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Pollinator protection measures added:
    • Application prohibited during the blooming of highly attractive to pollinators crops
    • Application in the evening only, if required, during the blooming of attractive to pollinators crops
  • Updated buffer zones
  • Obligation to install and maintain a vegetative filter strip (VFS)

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary to the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
