Narration: How vaccines work.

Text on screen: How Vaccines Work.

[A notebook and a shield with a medical cross on it appear on screen.]

Narration: Our immune system is our body's natural defence system.

Text on screen: Our immune system: The body's natural defence system.

[The notebook opens to show an outline of a child's body.]

Narration: It keeps us healthy by responding to viruses and bacteria that are unfamiliar or that can make us sick.

[The notebook and shield disappear, and the child's body is now a solid silhouette enclosed in a circle. Viruses and bacteria bump at the edge of the circle but can't penetrate it.]

Narration: Vaccines work with our body's defence system.

[Two vaccine vials appear in the circle alongside the child.]

Narration: They help the body develop protection against diseases

Text on screen: Vaccines help the body develop protection against serious disease.

Narration: without having to actually get the diseases.

[A magnifying glass scans over the body and a question mark appears.]

Narration: How do they do this?

Text on screen: How do they do this?

Narration: Vaccinations safely expose our immune systems

Text on screen: They expose our immune system to antigens.

[The body disappears from the circle and multiple types of bacteria and viruses appear.]

Narration: to key parts of bacteria or viruses, called antigens.

[The viruses and bacteria disappear until only one bacteria with antigens is shown. An arrow points to an antigen on the bacteria.]

Narration: The immune system responds to the antigens by creating antibodies and memory cells for future protection.

Text on screen: The immune system creates antibodies and memory cells.

[The virus disappears leaving only the antigens in the circle. Y shaped antibodies appear and connect to the antigens. Round memory cells appear and thought bubbles remembering the bacteria appear beside each memory cell.]

Narration: Antibodies will attach to the harmful bacteria or viruses so the immune system can remove them from the body.

[The antigens disappear leaving only the Y shaped antibodies. A bacteria reappears in the circle and the Y shaped antibodies move in and attach to it. The bacteria disappears.]

Narration: Later, if we encounter that bacteria or virus,

Text on screen: Our immune system remembers.

[A memory cell appears on screen. A shield with a medical cross on it is beside it. Bacteria floats beside the memory cell.]

Narration: our memory cells quickly produce more antibodies to help remove it from our body faster, so that we either don't get the disease or prevents serious illness if we do get the disease.

Text on screen: Avoid disease or prevent serious illness.

[A thought bubble remembering the bacteria appears beside the memory cell. Y shaped antibodies appear on screen. The outline of the child's body reappears and is safe in the circle, with antibodies and the shield protecting the circle's perimeter.]
