Better stormwater management for Sault Ste. Marie residents

53 new projects approved in 28 communities
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, July 17, 2017—The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while also laying the foundation for new economic opportunities to strengthen the middle class across the province.
Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and his Worship Christian Provenzano, Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, today announced that a new stormwater project in Sault Ste. Marie has been approved under the Government of Canada’s Clean Water and Wastewater Fund. The federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for this project—over $2.1 million. The provincial government is providing up to 25 per cent of funding for this project, over $1 million, and the City of Sault Ste. Marie will provide the balance of funding.
Thanks to this investment, residents of Sault Ste. Marie will benefit from improved stormwater management which will reduce the risk of flooding and better protect the property and livelihood of local residents. Projects like these are essential to keeping our waterways clean and our communities healthy and livable.
In addition to this project, over $4.5 million in federal funding for 52 water and wastewater projects will benefit 27 other communities across Ontario.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.

The Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.
