Backgrounder: The governments of Canada and New Brunswick invest in infrastructure renewal in Fredericton

The Government of Canada is investing $12,372,198 to support infrastructure improvements in Fredericton.

South Core Flood Resiliency

This investment will support upgrades to water, storm and sanitary sewers in the south side of Fredericton.

Funding will also upgrade streets and off-street piping.

This project, which is divided into four sections, will support the modernization of infrastructure nearing the end of its useful life to support the City to adapt to climate change and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding:

1. Regent St. component (King St. to Aberdeen St.);

2. Northumberland St. (extends from the Saint John River outfall, under St Anne's Point Dr. to Argyle St.);

3. Westmorland St. (extends from the Saint John River outfall, under St Anne's Point Dr. to Dundonald St.);

4. South Hill Trunk Storm Sewer: specifically upgrading a large storm sewer line that collects both major and minor stormwater flows.

Northside Flood Resiliency

Upgrades to water, storm and sanitary sewers in the north side of Fredericton create safe flow routes for water during heavy downpours will improve the City’s resiliency to flooding events through three components:

1. From the Saint John River to 320 St. Mary's Street: replace and upgrade core infrastructure through realignment and upsizing of infrastructure.

2. From the Nashwaak River through the Canada Street intersection up to the future extension of Pickard Street: upgrade and replace core infrastructure, which will help adapt roads for high intensity rainfall events.

3. Between Main Street and Hillcourt Drive: replace sections of storm sewer and sanitary sewer, which will decrease flooding events and protect residential and commercial properties.

Enhancing Active Transportation in Fredericton* **

This investment will address existing gaps in the City’s active transportation network, including the construction of new sidewalks, crossings and multi-use trails, the installation of bike racks on transit buses, as well as upgrade over 5km of multi-use trail.
