An immigration system for Canada’s future: Strengthening our communities

Canada is a country that has been shaped by immigration. Except for Indigenous Peoples, who have been here since time immemorial, everyone who lives in Canada is an immigrant or the descendant of an immigrant. Immigration has helped shape Canada as a nation and will continue to play a role in our future. Within the next decade, immigrants could represent about half of our total population, and they will soon represent 100% of the growth of our labour force.

To support Canada’s economy and help strengthen our communities, it’s essential to have immigration policies and programs that are modern, responsive to change, and aligned with Canada’s social, economic and cultural needs.

Until spring 2023, we’ll be talking to people across the country to collaborate on a vision of the future of Canada’s immigration system.

 Our goal

To gather and provide meaningful input toward a vision for the future of Canada’s immigration system, informed by the priorities and values of diverse stakeholders.

 We want to discuss

  • How can immigration support Canada’s economic and social goals for the future?
  • What are the strengths of our immigration system today?
  • What changes can we make to help us achieve long-term success, and what will be the milestones along the way?
  • How can we best meet the needs of newcomers to Canada?
