COW – Screening of First Applications vs Extension Requests – May 28, 2026
All foreign nationals, immigrants and refugees are carefully assessed before coming into Canada. This screening ensures that these persons do not pose a threat to the health, safety or security of Canadians.
When required, cases are referred for full security screening with Public Safety partners.
Every new application is assessed, even if previously approved.
New information or expired screening can trigger a fresh review at the time of re-application.
Officers are trained to identify risk and receive updated intelligence information as worldly situations evolve.
In Canada, enforcement is led by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada works closely with the CBSA and security partners.
Together, we identify inadmissible or out-of-status individuals and take appropriate enforcement and or administrative actions permitted under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to ensure the continued health, safety and security of Canadians.
