OLLO – Question Period Note – Haiti – February 6, 2023
Date: Feb. 3, 2023
Classification: Unclassified
Department: IRCC
Issue:
IRCC activities amid instability in Haiti
Proposed Response:
- IRCC is closely monitoring the situation in Haiti and making adjustments as needed to help local clients.
- IRCC services at the Embassy, such as visa printing, are now fully operational, and the visa application center (VAC) is back to regular opening hours.
- Regional IRCC migration offices are supporting the office in Port-au-Prince by processing applications remotely, where possible, to limit the impact to clients.
If pressed:
- All visitors to Canada require a temporary resident visa, except citizens of countries where an exemption has been granted. Foreign nationals from visa-required countries must have a visitor visa to enter Canada.
- The scheduling of permanent residence interviews has been affected due to local conditions that are preventing client access to the embassy. IRCC is exploring the use of videoconferencing between the VAC in Port-au-Prince and IRCC officers in other locations to help move these cases forward.
