Minister Joly issues statement on St. Patrick's Day

Statement

OTTAWA, March 17, 2016

Today marks St. Patrick’s Day for the more than four million Canadians who trace their ancestry back to Ireland. For decades, Canadians have celebrated the life of St. Patrick on March 17, honouring the patron saint of Ireland and the ancient heritage of the Irish.

The story of Irish immigration to Canada is typified by those who fled the tragedy of the Great Famine in the 19th century. The Irish who found refuge in our country helped to build Canada into the dynamic, welcoming and diverse country it is today.

As Minister for Canadian Heritage, I wish all Canadians who are celebrating a happy St. Patrick’s Day. And I encourage all Canadians to take part in the many events and parades across the country.

Sláinte mhaith!
