Minister Joly issues statement on Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Memorial Day

Ottawa, May 4, 2016
Beginning at sundown today Jewish communities across Canada and around the world will observe Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Memorial Day or Holocaust Remembrance Day.
It is a day for reflection on and remembrance of the Holocaust and the overwhelming suffering and loss of millions of innocent lives, including six million Jewish men, women, and children, and others who were victims because of mental or physical disabilities, race, religion, and sexual orientation.
On this day we also honour the resilience, strength, and courage of the survivors, many of whom now call Canada home.
In remembering the atrocities of the Holocaust in this way, we reject the hatred, anti-Semitism, and evil that allowed it to happen. We have a collective responsibility to ensure that it is never forgotten and that it never happens again.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I join in remembering the lives lost and in honouring the survivors. May we all learn the enduring lessons of the Holocaust and reaffirm our commitment to uphold human rights.
