June 2, 2021—Ottawa—Today, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, spoke with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
As part of their first call, Minister Mendicino and Secretary Mayorkas discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, including global migration and refugee protection.
They discussed the sources of forced displacement and irregular migration in Central America, the challenge of irregular and unsafe population flows from the region, as well as concerns about protecting the integrity of our shared North American perimeter.
Minister Mendicino highlighted the Government of Canada’s intent to raise the international profile of these issues through various forums, including the Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework Support Platform, which Canada will chair beginning in July. The Platform supports the efforts of Central American countries and Mexico to develop regional approaches to address forced displacement and its underlying causes.
Minister Mendicino and Secretary Mayorkas also discussed the management of our shared border, including the current border restrictions and the eventual resumption of international travel, which will be critical for economic recovery in both countries.
They agreed to stay in close contact over the coming weeks and months to continue to work on joint solutions to North American migration challenges.
