The honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino: Saturday, January 25 marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year. It's a time of gift-giving, parades, artistry, food, reflection and celebration for Chinese families around the world.

For Canadians of all backgrounds, Chinese New Year is an opportunity to recognize China's many proud customs and traditions, and to acknowledge the positive contributions the Chinese community has had in Canada.

2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat, being the first animal in the cycle of the Chinese Zodiac, heralds a year of new beginnings and renewals.

To everyone celebrating Chinese New Year, enjoy the excitement of the holiday and may the year ahead be full of happiness, prosperity and good fortune.

Happy New Year!
