Going the extra mile for a smile - The story of Ahmad Siar Mateen
Ahmad Siar Mateen is an Afghan refugee and artist who has relied on his sense of humour to manage the challenges of life in Afghanistan and his resettlement journey to Canada. He arrived in Canada in September 2022 and is now living in a community outside Toronto.
Siar’s mother, a high-school English teacher and single parent, courageously raised Siar and his brother to appreciate the importance of higher education, positivity, and respect for women. In spite of the hardships his family faced, Siar spread joy and laughter wherever he went. At age 8, his talent earned him a part on an Afghanistan national television program for children. After graduating from university, he fulfilled his dream of landing a leading role when he became the host of a comedy show called Shabake Khanda (or “Laughter Night”).
Siar quickly gained fame for being a rare, uncensored Afghan voice, who spoke out against injustice and showed support for women’s rights. Siar’s hard work earned him immense success and appreciation. However, speaking openly came at a cost. When the threatening phone calls and personal attacks became intolerable, Siar grew increasingly anxious about the safety and security of his family. When Kabul fell, his career ended.
“The Taliban takeover was the darkest time of my life,” Siar says. “Defending women’s rights on my shows put me on Taliban’s kill list. I had to go into hiding, and suddenly the world became smaller. I couldn’t go home to protect my family because people recognized my face and voice despite the fact I changed my appearance.”
Siar and his family faced many challenges after deciding to leave Afghanistan for their own safety, including being detained by the Taliban at the airport. Even though they managed to catch a flight out of Afghanistan, it was hard for Siar to believe that he had made it out alive.
“Once I realized that my family was safe in Abu Dhabi, I slept in peace for the first time in months.”
Siar and his family already feel at home in Canada and have settled into their new Toronto community. Siar is determined to succeed and fulfill his dream of continuing his education. He is also working hard to create a new comedy YouTube channel.
“My admiration for Canada is like the love I feel for my mother because of all the kindness. I can not forget that Canada saved our lives and gave us the chance to build a new life.”
