Budget 2016 Invests in Urban Aboriginal Strategy

Over 50 per cent of Canada’s Indigenous peoples live in urban centres. Some are long-time residents, others move for their education, a job or a fresh start.
Currently, the Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS) provides project funding for programs and services that help increase the participation of urban Indigenous peoples in the economy. Budget 2016 provided a $23.7 million renewal of the Urban Aboriginal Strategy for 2016-17, bringing the total funding level for this year to $53.1 million.
Through Budget 2016, the Government also committed to identify ways to strengthen the UAS by working with Indigenous partners to renew the program. Roundtable discussions, the first of which is being held in Montréal today and attended by Minister Bennett will be focused on finding ways to improve the program.
