National Aboriginal Day Statement from the Honourable Carolyn Bennett
News Release
June 21, 2016 – Ottawa, ON – Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada
The Honourable Minister Bennett is joined by Prime Minister Trudeau and the Honourable Minister Wilson-Raybould at a Sunrise Ceremony held in Gatineau, QC to commemorate 20 years of National Aboriginal Day.
The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day:
Boozhoo and greetings from the traditional territories of the Algonquin people!
Today, Canadians will celebrate a special milestone; the 20th Anniversary of National Aboriginal Day, that was proclaimed in 1996 by the then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. This date also marks the Summer Solstice – traditionally a very significant day for Indigenous Peoples.
As we celebrate 20 years, National Aboriginal Day continues to be an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about the unique culture, heritage and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples that have helped shape this great nation. It also provides an opportunity for all Canadians to renew or build upon their relations with Indigenous peoples of Canada as we move forward on this journey of reconciliation.
Let’s take the time to share in the experience of National Aboriginal Day with our friends and family today, and take the time every day to promote respect, understanding and appreciation.
One way all Canadians can do this is by picking up a book written by an Indigenous author or related to an Indigenous subject as part of #IndigenousReads month. Indigenous titles are among the world's best reading today. Through reading, we can all play a role in celebrating and promoting First Nations, Inuit and Métis authors and books.
Reconciliation has to be about all Canadians. Let’s take the time to share in the experience of National Aboriginal Day with our friends and family, and take the time every day to promote respect, understanding and appreciation.
Happy National Aboriginal Day everyone!
