Minister Bennett Welcomes Fall 2016 Auditor General's Report on Specific Claims

Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (November 29, 2016) — The Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett, issued the following statement today:

“I welcome the release today of the Auditor General’s Fall 2016 Report on First Nation Specific Claims. Our Government is committed to implementing the report’s recommendations. This report will help inform joint work that is already ongoing to improve the process that is in place for resolving specific claims.

First Nations have made clear their concerns about how this process is currently functioning. Our Government has heard these concerns and has not lost sight of the critical work that remains to be done with respect to resolving these historical grievances.

This is why we are moving forward with the Assembly of First Nations, First Nations and other interested parties in a true spirit of co-operation and renewal to find fair and practical ways to improve the specific claims process and advance the goal of reconciliation with First Nations.

Our Government is committed to renewing the relationship with Indigenous peoples, based on the recognition of rights, respect, co-operation and partnership. Negotiated settlements are an invaluable tool in our work to right past wrongs. Canada and all Canadians benefit when we take concrete steps to advance reconciliation with First Nations.”

This report covers the period between January 2015 and July 2016 and reached back to earlier periods as required.
