Congratulatory Statement for the First Nations Finance Authority's 2018 Governor General Innovation Award
Statement
Ottawa, Ontario – May 23, 2018 – The Minister of Indigenous Services, Jane Philpott, issued the following statement today:
"I would like to extend my congratulations to the First Nations Finance Authority (FNFA) for being awarded the 2018 Governor General Innovation Award today. This award recognizes the FNFA's innovative and transformative work to help build economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life of First Nations across Canada.
The FNFA, established under the First Nations Fiscal Management Act, enables First Nations to collaboratively access long-term financing at preferred rates through the issuance of bonds on capital markets. First Nations use this financing model to invest in infrastructure and socio-economic development projects including water treatment, roads, housing, schools, health, security and emergency services, renewable energy and aquaculture.
Economic prosperity for Indigenous peoples is a top priority for the Government of Canada and for the department of Indigenous Services. The forward-thinking and dedicated work of the FNFA contributes to our collective goals of increasing Indigenous economic prosperity, closing unacceptable socio-economic gaps and improving economic opportunities for Indigenous peoples in Canada."
