Government Innovation Lab to co-locate with Ottawa business accelerator
National capital region location offers new model for government-business collaboration
November 9, 2017 – Ottawa ON
Canadian entrepreneurs will be able to see government in action with the move of a federal public service innovation space to Bayview Yards.
Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Michael Tremblay, President and CEO of Bayview Yards and Invest Ottawa, announced that the Innovation Lab hosted by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) will be embedded directly within the innovation ecosystem of Canada’s National Capital Region.
The Innovation Lab was set up to build capacity and create a more modern and user-centric public service. It uses innovative methodologies to solve complex policy, program/service or regulatory challenges in the public service. And with its co-location at the Bayview Yards innovation hub, the Lab will be well placed to meet the needs of Canada’s innovators and entrepreneurs.
Bayview Yards is Ottawa’s one-stop business acceleration shop and an epicentre of job creation. This non-profit provides technical, business and market capabilities that help entrepreneurs and firms launch, grow and thrive in the global economy.
Invest Ottawa is the lead economic development agency for the nation’s capital. The agency delivers programs and services that advance innovation, business acceleration, investment and trade, as well as increase entrepreneurial momentum, wealth and job creation.
“The Government of Canada is working to position our country as a global centre for innovation. We are doing this by investing in smart, collaborative partnerships that fuel growth. This move to Bayview Yards will allow government to work side by side with Canadian entrepreneurs and firms to spur innovation, leading to the development of innovative products and technologies here in our nation’s capital.”
– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development
“Ottawa is rapidly becoming a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. With ISED’s Innovation Lab now co-located in Bayview Yards, it will spur a modern, dynamic approach to public service, building on the talent and creativity of Ottawa’s already first-rate public service workers. Through these changes, we are improving our government, strengthening our economy and creating well-paying jobs in Ottawa and around the country.
– Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre
“Co-locating the Innovation Lab at Bayview Yards will help promote greater collaboration among innovative entrepreneurs. This move is an encouraging, innovative new approach to helping our entrepreneurs and small businesses turn amazing ideas into new products and services for the world market. I look forward to seeing the results produced by these innovative firms as they work to grow and expand to new markets, creating good, well-paying middle-class jobs in the process.”
– The Honourable Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Small Business and Tourism
“We are delighted to welcome the ISED Innovation Lab to Bayview Yards and to broker greater innovation, technology development and adoption between Ottawa entrepreneurs and our public sector. The co-location of the Lab with Invest Ottawa will make new design-thinking capabilities and expertise available to the firms we serve and will create new opportunities to engage government as a first customer. It will also help us leverage Ottawa’s unique strengths as a top technology hub and seat of the federal government and will spur new opportunities for private-public sector innovation.”
– Michael Tremblay, President and CEO of Bayview Yards and Invest Ottawa.
The Innovation Lab supports innovation and open government. It offers an innovative space to co-create solutions with citizens, public servants and stakeholders for building capacity and creating a more modern and user-centric public service.
Since its launch in March 2015, the Innovation Lab has completed projects with over 70 departments and agencies in the public service and has formed over 35 partnerships with private and academic sectors across Canada’s innovation ecosystem.
Through other innovation activities the Lab has welcomed more than 15,000 people through its doors.
