Statement by Minister Chagger to mark Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day
Ottawa, Ontario, June 27, 2018—The United Nations declared June 27 as Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day to raise public awareness of these businesses’ contribution to sustainable development. The Honourable Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Small Business and Tourism, issued the following statement:
“Today, June 27, we recognize all micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises—not only in Canada but also around the world—for their efforts to drive economies, create jobs for the middle class and strengthen communities.
“The International Council for Small Business says that micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises, or MSMEs, make up more than 90% of the world’s firms and account on average for 60% to 70% of global employment and 50% of the world economy’s GDP. Those are big numbers.
“Here in Canada, MSMEs are even more significant. They represent 99% of all businesses in the country and account for nearly 90% of private sector jobs. When you consider that more than 10 million Canadians are employed by the small businesses we are recognizing today, their importance to our economy cannot be understated.
“They are not just key drivers of economic growth. Entrepreneurs and MSMEs are also critical to ensuring greater equality between women and men. Canada’s competitiveness is deeply tied to women’s opportunity to work and to earn a good living from that work. Canada’s first Women Entrepreneurship Strategy unites federal government resources under one framework to help women grow and scale their businesses.
“A warm thank you to all entrepreneurs on international Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day for their efforts in making Canada a better place to live, work, and play.”
