British Columbia

  • Click Materials – $4.6 million – Click Materials is developing a next-generation electrochromic window solution for the residential, commercial and automotive markets that offers dramatic cost reductions, unique performance benefits and significant energy savings while improving human wellness. Click can produce windows at 60% lower cost than incumbent technologies and will tie into the mega-trend of connected smart buildings and voice-activated smart homes. It will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • CryoLogistics – $2.1 million – CryoLogistics has developed an insulated container that uses liquid carbon dioxide as a natural refrigerant for shipping pallet loads of high-value temperature-sensitive food and biopharma products through the global supply chain.

Alberta

  • Quebe Technologies Inc. – $3 million – Quebe has developed an industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) device that uses artificial intelligence to cost-effectively detect and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at oil and gas facilities. It is estimated that this technology will help reduce emissions by approximately 6 MT of CO2 equivalent by 2030—about as much as taking 1.3 million cars off the road.

Ontario

  • EcoPackers – $2.75 million – EcoPackers transforms agricultural by-products into 100% plant-based and compostable alternatives to traditional plastic inputs. The company’s eco-resins are designed to allow existing manufacturers to develop eco-friendly single-use plastics, like cutlery, casing and packaging.
  • Aspire Food Group – $10 million – Aspire is building the first fully automated cricket farm to enable cost-effective scale-up of insect protein as a sustainable alternative to animal protein. Aspire uses a pioneering technology (including robotics and automated data collection) to farm insects that have a similar protein quality to meat and an environmental footprint closer to that of plants. Aspire’s project targets markets that use insects for applications in nutrition, biomedicine and agrochemicals. This funding will allow the company to relocate its headquarters in Canada.
  • Pantonium$2.1 million – Pantonium creates digital infrastructure to enable on-demand public transportation. Its software allows public transit agencies to take buses off fixed routes and guide vehicles on optimized journeys that respond to user demand in real time.  With Pantonium-powered on-demand transit, cities can provide better quality public transportation at a lower cost per ride. It can operate as a stand-alone system or integrate seamlessly with fixed routes. By 2022, this project will help prevent over 6 million car trips, eliminating over 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Quebec

  • Anomera – $5.0 million – Anomera manufactures carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from sustainably harvested Canadian forests using a patented eco-friendly method. Anomera’s first market is in the replacement of environmentally damaging plastic microbeads used in cosmetics and personal care products.  For industrial applications such as cement, polymer composites and coatings, as well as for applications in agriculture and medical/life sciences, Anomera has developed a patent-pending CNC powder that readily re-disperses to the nanoscale.
  • Effenco – $4.25 million – Effenco has developed a commercial truck connectivity platform—the world’s most flexible and efficient heavy vehicle hybrid solution—that enables up to 10% fuel savings and reduces vehicle maintenance costs and GHG emissions.
  • Sollum Technologies Inc. – $5.0 million – Sollum Technologies has created the only smart lighting solution that dynamically recreates and modulates the full spectrum of the sun’s natural light. Sollum’s LED hardware and cloud-based platform enables greenhouse producers to create customized light recipes adapted to each produce growth cycle, regardless of the plants’ native climate and the location of the greenhouse. This results in over 30% less energy consumption and 10% less water consumption compared to the industry standard.

Nova Scotia

  • Salient Energy – $3.0 million – Salient Energy has invented a new type of battery to power the world’s transition to clean energy. The zinc-ion battery is cheaper, safer and longer lasting than the lithium-ion batteries that are currently most widely in use.
