CIPO releases its 2024−2025 Annual Report

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)'s 2024–2025 Annual Report was tabled in Parliament on October 31, 2025. The report highlights CIPO's key activities and results from the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
In 2024–2025, CIPO made significant advancements across all areas of operations, including various system upgrades, a reduction in trademark backlogs and speedier registration timelines. A key milestone was the launch of the Next Generation Patents (NGP), a digital transformation initiative to modernize patent IT systems. Modernization efforts also led to enhanced processes for industrial design and copyright, improved workflows and a more efficient client experience. On the international front, CIPO continued to strengthen Canada's role in the global intellectual property (IP) ecosystem by building partnerships and deepening collaborations with international IP offices.

2024–2025 was a pivotal year for CIPO, where we achieved significant advancements in digital modernization, service enhancements and strategic international collaborations, all of which have contributed to strengthening Canada's role in the global IP ecosystem.

CIPO made notable developments in digital modernization through initiatives such as Next Generation Patents (NGP), an initiative aiming to streamline the entire patent process. As of March 2025, 88% of patent transactions were processed through the new MyCIPO Patents portal.

The organization succeeded in reducing its inventory of trademark applications awaiting examination by 42% and turnaround times for first actions by 18%.

CIPO introduced automated copyright registration, enabling real-time processing and instant access to copyright registration certificates.

The organization expanded its awareness and education efforts by introducing new digital learning resources and enhancing outreach initiatives, collaborating with partners on a wide range of IP topics, attending numerous conferences, trade shows and stakeholder meetings, and providing personalized guidance to hundreds of entrepreneurs through its IP advisory service.

In 2024, CIPO proudly marked the five-year anniversary since Canada joined the Madrid Protocol, the Nice Agreement and the Singapore Treaty, which facilitated access to international markets for Canadian businesses and further reinforced Canada's presence in the global IP landscape.

The organization continued to collaborate with international IP offices to increase the efficiency of the global IP system and to support Canada's IP interests.
