Making copies when visiting LAC

When making copies at a Library and Archives Canada (LAC) research room, you must follow the rules in the User Agreement to protect materials for future use.

Most of LAC's collection is open for viewing. However, you may not be able to view or make copies of some of the collection (see Restrictions on viewing and copying material, as well as Terms and conditions).

You may also order copies online.

Copying equipment

You may use the equipment below to make copies. Some equipment may only be used during service hours when staff are available.

Microform scanners

You may use the microfilm and microfiche scanners in the Microform Consultation Room in Ottawa and Vancouver to scan images to your own USB key for free during service hours. Scans cannot be emailed to yourself as the computers are not connected to the internet.

Cameras and tripods

You may take pictures of material with your own camera after you get staff approval. Complete the consent form and get approval during service hours.

You may photograph rare books that are not fragile if you don't use a flash.

You may borrow tripods from the service desk during service hours, which may be used at any time. You may use your own tripod if you get approval during service hours.

Scanners for archival material

Our Textual Consultation Room in Ottawa and Vancouver is equipped with on-site scanners available for reservation. Please see a consultation officer for more information.

You may bring your own pre-approved scanner. Devices must be overhead scanners and emit no light. For a list of approved scanners, please contact Consultation Services. LAC reserves the right to refuse the use of any device deemed unsuitable. Staff will inspect equipment for its suitability.
