Key priorities

  • Ensure the maintenance and restoration of the territory and infrastructures;
  • Ensure the conservation and protection of the natural, cultural and heritage assets of Battlefields Park;
  • Promote the park's history, heritage and assets;
  • Maintain a balance between the historic and urban vocations of Battlefields Park, between accessibility, conservation and heritage promotion;
  • Organize educational and recreational activities, exhibitions, guided tours, shows and events of a historical, cultural, recreational and sport-related nature;
  • Develop human capital and bring talents to the fore;
  • Affirm the NBC's unique positioning and improve customer experiences;
  • Improve and diversify significantly the NBC's financial capacity;
  • Actively engage the NBC in a process of reconciliation;
  • Make sustainable development central to the NBC's actions.

Refocusing Government Spending

In Budget 2023, the government committed to reducing spending by $14.1 billion over the next five years, starting in 2023–24, and by $4.1 billion annually after that.

Although not officially part of this spending reduction exercise, the National Battlefields Commission will respect the spirit of this exercise by taking the following measures:

  • Closely monitor operating expenses for all services;
  • Constantly re-evaluate its asset maintenance and investment plans;
  • Optimize the use of resources.

Conservation

Departmental result:
  • Battlefields Park is a safe and well-maintained site
Planned spending: $14,180,000
Planned human resources: 22 planned full-time equivalents

The NBC plans to continue implementing all actions contributing to providing a well-maintained and safe park for its users. In addition, the NBC will be undertaking a number of projects related to the maintenance of its assets, as well as various development plans for its spaces.

Promotion of Heritage

Departmental result:
  • People visit the National Battlefields Park;
  • Visitors benefit from a heritage and educational experience.
Planned spending: $3,200,000
Planned human resources: 19 planned full-time equivalents

The NBC will continue to enhance its educational, cultural and heritage activities, notably with the presentation of a new exhibition in spring 2024. In summer 2024, the NBC will offer renewed and diversified programming at the Edwin-Bélanger Bandstand.
