The Student Masterworks Exhibition at the Plains of Abraham Museum

News release

June 28, 2018 – Québec – The National Battlefields Commission

The 10th edition of the Student Masterworks Exhibition will open to the public on July 1 at the Plains of Abraham Museum. The National Battlefields Commission (NBC), the project’s organizers, Christian and Jean-Pierre Lagueux, and teachers working for the Beauce-Etchemin School Board cordially invite you to tour the exhibition offered free of charge from July 1 to September 3. It features some 200 new replicas of historical objects from the New France era up to the 20th century carefully crafted by students from different grade levels. The exhibition is an excellent showcase of a learning project in which museums and schools work together.

Quick facts

  • The 2018 Student Masterworks Exhibition presents replicas of historical objects crafted by students of elementary and high schools of the Beauce-Etchemin and Capitale school boards, Collège Dina-Bélanger and student members of the archeology students’ association at Université Laval. Of the 500 or so students who participated in the project, 200 had their work selected for the exhibition presented at the Plains of Abraham Museum for a 10th summer season.

  • The new collection of close to 200 replicas of historical objects from New France to the 20th century took several thousand hours for the students to complete, assisted by their teachers: Christian Lagueux (Polyvalente de Saint-Georges in Saint-Georges); Chantal Fecteau and Jean-Pierre Lagueux (Polyvalente Bélanger in Saint-Martin); Chantale Fortin, Catherine Villeneuve, Chantal Ouellet and Sylvie Fortin  (École St-Fidèle, Québec), Isabelle Lambert (Collège Dina-Bélanger, Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse) and Sacha Pilote (archeology students’ association at Université Laval). Examples of replicas based on the past but made during our era include flags, maps, portraits, drawings, pottery, furniture, clothing, wampum, carved stone and catalogne rugs. The 2018 edition also features replicas of objects commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

  • The NBC once again commends the involvement of the teachers and students who took part in this singular project for the purpose of sparking interest in, and knowledge of, our heritage. Their creations represent everyday objects used by our ancestors. The NBC is proud to showcase the students’ achievements and our partnership with the Beauce-Etchemin School Board that has overseen this educational activity for the past 18 years.

  • The 2009 edition of the Student Masterworks Exhibition won the Canadian Museums Association’s prestigious Museums and Schools Partnership Award – A success story for the advancement of scholastic and museum practice.

  • The Student Masterworks Exhibition is free and open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Plains of Abraham Museum from July 1 to September 3, 2018.
