The National Research Council of Canada teams with United States Coast Guard and  Department of Homeland Security to advance icebreaking technology

July 25, 2017 – St. John’s, NL ─ The National Research Council of Canada (NRC), United States Coast Guard, and the United States Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate will showcase ongoing research relating to the U.S. heavy polar icebreaker acquisition program next week, at the NRC’s facility in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Members of the media are invited on an exclusive tour of the NRC’s ice tank for photo and video opportunities and to speak with government representatives on location to view ongoing model tests evaluating potential icebreakers performance. The testing will produce baseline requirements for new heavy polar icebreakers, expand the current designs and operational knowledge, and support the urgent need to recapitalize U.S. heavy icebreaking capability.

Media outlets will have an opportunity to view a demonstration of the icebreaking testing and speak with representatives from both the U.S. and Canadian governments.

The NRC has been preparing models and testing icebreakers and other vessels for more than 50 years and boasts more than 30 years of data, expertise, and validation in Arctic conditions.
