Mission Innovation
Backgrounder
On November 30, 2015, Prime Minister Trudeau announced Canada’s participation in Mission Innovation, along with 19 other countries. Participating governments have agreed to double their investments in clean energy research and development over five years.
Mission Innovation also encourages private sector leadership, including through the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. The Coalition, with Bill Gates as lead sponsor along with 27 other investors, has committed to investing significant capital to grow early-stage companies that emerge from government research support in participating countries, including Canada.
Under Mission Innovation, Canada aims to:
- Double federal government investment in clean energy R&D over five years;
- Encourage private sector funding of clean energy R&D, through the Breakthrough Energy Coalition or independently; and
- Increase domestic and international collaboration to advance Mission Innovation goals.
Through Mission Innovation, Canada will work with global partners to promote cleaner energy and better environmental outcomes that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to promote a clean environment and a strong economy, Canada is committed to investing an additional $100 million each year in clean technology producers and tackling Canada's most pressing environmental challenges. The Government of Canada will also invest an additional $200 million each year to support innovation and the use of clean technologies in the natural resource sectors. Clean energy research and development will be one of the areas of focus.
